Grant Allen is Senior Vice President of ABB Technology Ventures (ATV), the venture capital arm of ABB. Headquartered in Zurich, with offices in Silicon Valley and Washington, DC, ATV invests in high potential power, automation and green technology companies that can benefit from ABB’s engineering resources and broad global access. Grant has led investments in Validus DC Systems (datacenter power systems; acquired 19 months after investment), Scotrenewables (tidal turbines), TaKaDu (water utility SaaS analytics) and Industrial Defender (SCADA/ICS cybersecurity). Prior to ATV, Grant spent almost four years with Core Capital Partners, a $350 million venture fund, where his investments included Infinite Power Solutions (thin-film batteries), Univa (distributed resource management for big data/big compute) and OLO (mobile payments). Earlier in his career, he worked at Microsoft in their Mobile & Embedded Devices division; Jingle Networks (backed by First Round Capital, Goldman Sachs; sold for $63 million); and several start-ups, including a web services firm he co-founded as an undergraduate. He is an active angel investor, a founding member of NextGen Angels and an advisor to Uppidy, Aquicore and Melon (acquired by WegoWise). He is also Chairman of the Ocular Melanoma Foundation, for which he received the EnVest Foundation’s ‘40 Under 40’ award. Grant holds degrees from Duke University’s Pratt School of Engineering and The Wharton School.
