Cleantech Tour of China 2013
In November 2013, the Cleantech Group ran our 3rd annual Cleantech Tour of China. Thank you to our repeat tour lead sponsors – Idinvest Partners and Silicon Valley Bank – and our official legal partner, Dorsey Whitney.
On this tour, Cleantech Group took 8 cleantech company CEO’s, along with a select few investors and corporate executives, on an intense week of learnings on China and meetings with key players in the ecosystem. The tour provided the cleantech CEOs with an excellent taste of cleantech in China as it is today, as well as the opportunity to expose their companies to multiple China-based investors and partners interested in helping them ‘go to China.’
What did we do during the week? And why was it valuable?
At the core of the tour were 2 half-day showcase events in 2 cities — Beijing and Shanghai. These were the core occasions in which the touring companies presented their companies to China-based investors and companies, and created some valuable connections. Turn-out to the events reflected the strong Chinese interest in western clean technology and Cleantech Group’s brand and network in China. More than 100 guests (principally investors and companies) attended the showcases. No individual company could fix meetings with many of these people. That is the power of the group effect.
In addition to the showcases, we organized a series of private and exclusive meetings – to give people exposure to all the elements of the ecosystem in China and insights into how business gets done. That meant meetings withs: key state-owned enterprises such as BaoSteel and Shanghai Electric; with leading cross-border cleantech investors such as Tsing Capital; with technology entrepreneurs active in China, such as LP Amina; and with a range of experienced China-based professionals, able to provide their experiences of small foreign technology companies coming to China (some key do’s and don’ts on IP, structuring tax, as well as some input on the policy and market environment); and meetings with local government officials and a visit to an industrial park (in Changzhou, where 2-3 of our companies made valuable connections to local operators in their field of interest).
A last part of the value of the tour – and one not to be under-estimated – was the interaction and learnings from within the group. The 2013 group repeated what the 2012 group had also found – there was great value from spending this week together.
